September 2024 Newsletter

From the Pen of our new PACE Political Field Organizer Gisel Esmeralda Arriaga Barrios,

Hello! My name is Gisel Esmeralda Arriaga Barrios, I’m a recent graduate from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor where I received my MSW and I am also a UNLV alumni where I received my BSW. I am the current PACE (political action for candidate election) field organizer for the NV chapter. My role is to empower social workers to be politically active by engaging them to volunteer for campaigns, ensuring they’re registered to vote, and educating on the importance of social workers and their role in elections. I believe it is important for social workers to be politically active because of the uniqueness of our field, we work with all populations of people in all kinds of settings. We understand what is currently impacting individuals, families, and communities and how who we elect affects the people we work with and the places we work in.

Interested in getting involved? Have questions? Reach out to me via email: garriaga.naswnv@socialworkers.org and I’d be happy to chat! Excited to work with you all and will be in touch!

Thanks,

Gisel Arriaga Barrios (she/her/ella)

Restorative Justice Clinical Supervision

Date: September 18th at 10 am PT, 12 pm CT

Loctaion: Zoom

Using a case study method, this presentation will seek to troubleshoot how clinical supervision's "teach back" methodology fails to account for the systemic concerns of our clients. Clinical supervisors often inculcate agency expectations and norms into the relationships with supervisees instead of helping them see and discover how our work can empower and change their lives.

Presenter: Jack Register, LCSW, LISAC, BC-TMH, PhD Student

Jack has been a social worker for over 20 years with experience as a dually licensed addiction/clinical social worker. Jack was the Government Relations Director for the NASW NC chapter. Jack is a PhD student at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University.

Jack was named "One of Today’s Most Influential Social Workers – Social Work Today 2007" and received the Change Agent award in 2019 from the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce Other Voices

An online positive affect intervention was made available for clients as well. This training will outline BHS completion and referral data, modifications made to the implementation strategy to improve uptake, and the role of the case manager in deciding who is screened and which referrals to services are made.

This implicit bias awareness training was designed to develop anti-racist social work practitioners. It includes an explanation of implicit bias along with its causes and effects. Both general and social work practice examples are used to develop the skill of recognizing, interrupting, and mitigating implicit bias.

Virtual Professional Development Opportunities for Social Workers in Aging

NASW regularly collaborates with federal agencies and national organizations to enhance service delivery to older adults and to advance public policy benefitting older people. Professional development programming represents one strategy to achieve these goals. This document describes several virtual, national-level professional development programs that are relevant to social workers and offered by organizations with which NASW collaborates. Each program is free, and continuing education credits are not available. Programs are listed from most to least recent and include information about on-demand access.
