From the Pen of the President:

Jacqueline C. Jones, NASW-NV President

Welcome fall everyone!

I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable summer. Welcome back to the new and returning students, faculty, and administration at the UNLV and UNR Schools of Social Work. All the best as the fall semester gets underway. Our NASW-Nevada Chapter has exciting plans for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. Upcoming events for the month of September include a CEU Workshop, "Ethics and Risk Management in the New Era of Social Work," which will be presented by Gary Bailey, MSW, LSW, on Saturday, September 22, 2018. In addition, NASW-NV Chapter Membership Meetings are scheduled in Las Vegas on the evening of September 22, 2018, and in Reno on Monday, September 24, 2018.

There's no wrong time for doing the right thing. As social work professionals, students, and volunteers on the front line of community work, our voices need be heard individually and collectively as the upcoming election comes closer. As you know, the National Social Work Voter Mobilization Campaign is underway. (Be reminded--you aren't able to vote unless you're registered. Check your status here: https://www.nvsos.gov/votersearch/

) There are several questions we should be asking our candidates as we maintain accountability for the work we are doing in the community. Although we may not be able to do all the work needed, we remain a profession that is vital to the development and challenges before us.

As we continuously strive to "be the change we wish to see," we need to further educate ourselves and speak up for issues impacting the communities we serve. We encourage your participation and involvement in the NASW-Nevada Chapter.

We look forward to seeing you at one of the NASW-Nevada Chapter Membership Meetings!

Thank you for your membership and commitment to NASW-NV.

Legislative Priorities Survey

The NASW-Nevada Chapter develops an annual legislative agenda that helps guide our advocacy work in Carson City. We are also guided by the policy statements that will appear in Social Work Speaks 2018-2020 that is developed by the NASW Delegate Assembly with input from membership throughout the country.

We are currently seeking input from NASW-Nevada Chapter members and nonmembers as to their legislative/social policy priorities. Your feedback will help guide the development of the chapter’s 2019 legislative agenda.

NASW opposes nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to be next U.S. Supreme Court Justice

This is a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land. Kavanaugh's appointment would create an imbalance of judicial philosophy at a time when the court seems to be reneging on protecting the rights of vulnerable and underrepresented Americans.

Conservationists push back against wilderness proposal

Jennifer Willett, a professor at the University of Nevada, Reno's School of Social Work, said her profession has seen a recent resurgence of concern for the environment and how social work students learn more about the physical environment and its conservation issues, pollution and climate change.

"These issues are relevant to social work because people are impacted by their local government," she said in her prepared remarks. "If our local ecosystem is not healthy, we will not be healthy either."
